Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise when she was a child. Aunt Denise worked the night shift as a nurse so she could follow her passion for art literature and theater throughout the day. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's examples of how art could serve as an instrument for activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially aware and taught that she could express her thoughts through the arts. While DuVernay lived in Compton with her parents, she spent every summer living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. Her father was a witness to the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay would use her summers in Alabama to inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay finished Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. Following graduation, she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she received degrees in English as well as African American studies. While she was still in school, DuVernay was interested in creating for the broadcast media. She began as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to observe the house of one member of the jury as well as look through their trash. Due to her tasks she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism, and shifted into the business of publicity. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a Junior Publicist right after college. She was promoted to the position and set up her own PR company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Alongside PR, the agency has also launched lifestyle networks as well as promotions, like The Urban Beauty Collective.
