Penelope Cruz Sanchez

Penelope Cruz Sanchez was the daughter of Eduardo Cruz (a retailer) and Encarna Sanchez (a hairdresser). As a child and a devoted performer, and would reenact commercials on TV for the entertainment of her family. But, she decided to devote her energies to dancing. She continued her training with a number of well-respected dancers, after having spent 9 years studying classical ballet in Spain's National Conservatory. When she was 15 she followed her destiny when she outclassed over 300 other dancers at an audition by a talent agency. The agency offered her roles on Spanish music videos and TV. The contract resulted in a variety of roles, which opened the way to a future on the world of big screens. Cruz made her debut film in 1993's The Greek Labyrinth (The Greek Labyrinth). She then briefly made an appearance in Framed (1992) the Timothy Dalton thriller. Her final film was the Oscar-winning Belle Epoque (1992), in which she played one of the four sisters fighting to win the heart of a handsome deserter from the army. The film also garnered several Goyas that are the Spanish equivalent of the Academy Awards. Her resume continued to grow by three or four films each year, and soon Cruz was an established star in Spanish cinema. Live Flesh (1997) (Live Flesh) offered her the chance to work with renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodovar (who would later be her ticket to international fame), and the same year she was the lead actress in the thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film Open Your Eyes (1997), a huge hit in Spain that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). In 1998, her fortunes changed when she took home the best Actress Goya for the industry-related movie comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos (1998). After a few more tries at film in the English language, Cruz's first international success was Almodovar’s All About My Mother (1999) where she portrayed an unchaste, yet very well-meaning nun. Cruz became in high demand both on the Atlantic and west coast as the film received numerous awards and honors. Her next film was Woman on Top (2000), an American comedy about a chef who has a dazzling culinary talent and a severe case of motion sickness. While in the US,
